10 Tips to Make Your Out of State Move Smooth

Have an out of state move on the horizon? When you’re looking at a move of any size or scope, it’s important to make sure you’ve planned and organized your household prior, but this is even more important when it comes to more long distance moves. Handling an out of state move isn’t a necessarily simple process, but if you’re organized and start planning ahead early, you’ll be set up for success.

Everything You Need to Know

Regardless of whether you’ve hired a professional full service moving company, a rental truck for a self move, or if you’re just moving what you can in your own vehicle, the most important part of an out of state move is properly planning the process. If you’ve moved before, you’ll know the importance of keeping your items organized, labelled, and grouped in a way that streamlines your process, but this is even more important when dealing with an out of state relocation. For 10 tips to make sure your move is successful, read below.

1. Picking Movers

Choose a mover that is open, honest, and that is experienced with long distance or out of state moves. Beware of scams and make sure you’re getting the best prices!

2. Stick to a Budget

Don’t spend more than you’re comfortable with on any aspect of your move by creating a moving budget to keep track of expenses, and stick to it!

3. Take Inventory

Go through your items and take stock of what you have and what condition everything is in. If you don’t need, want, or use it, get rid of it!

4. Clear Out Unneeded Items

Once you’ve taken your inventory, donate, give away, sell, or throw away unwanted or unused items.

5. Organize Your Things

After you’ve finished decluttering, organize your remaining items to get them ready for the packing process. Keep like with like and take things room by room to make packing easier.

6. Obtain Packing Materials

You can get usually packing materials from any moving or rental truck company, or can ask around for boxes to reuse for your moving process.

7. Start the Packing Process

Start packing items room by room and keep everything properly labelled and organized to make sure fragile items don’t get mixed in with heavier things that can break.

8. Keep Your Addresses Current

Update your address with any credit card companies, banks, or other institutions that need your current information on hand, especially places like the post office!

9. Transfer Your Utility Information

Put any utilities at your new home in your name, and make sure to take any utilities at your old address out of your name to avoid overpaying on your bills.

10. Get Ready!

Now that you’ve gotten all of that out of the way, you can focus on getting yourself together and packing up any items you’re keeping with you on your journey. Good luck!

If your move is just to the next state over or from one side of the country to another, no out of state move is done well without planning ahead of time or practicing organization. This isn’t a process that can be done well without planning well ahead and making sure everything is in order before moving day. However, if you’re staying organized and not waiting until the last minute, you’re setting yourself up for a successful and simply moving process out of state.
