Over the past almost 2 years now, the housing market has reflected the uncertainty felt far and wide by people all over the world in reflection of the COVID-19 pandemic. Between individuals and families alike moving away from crowded cities, relocating to other locations because of now-permanent remote work environments, as well as complications to the moving process itself due to the pandemic, the current housing market is one like we’ve never seen before. Moving trends are changing yet again.

As things continue to evolve amidst new markets (and COVID!) developments, many might be wondering what the moving trends for 2022 are, and how to anticipate them in order to make the right decision for you and your family if you’re eyeing a possible 2022 move. So what can we expect from the housing market in 2022? Let’s find out!

Housing Market Trends 2022

In 2022, the market continues to adjust to it’s new ‘normal’, which is to say, things are calming down in comparison to the recent couple of years, but is still very different from how things used to be.

Better Housing Inventory

Over 2021, many saw tight housing inventory causing huge competition between buyers, as well as large amounts of people migrating to new areas all at once due to the ongoing pandemic, which caused a huge amount of competition in areas where there hadn’t been as much until recently.

However, in 2022, housing inventory seems to be rising as more people put their homes up for sale, thus creating a more “buyer-friendly” market. With more options to choose from, this will lessen the cutthroat competition, and allow buyers to relax a little bit. This also indicates that the market is stabilizing a little bit after a tumultuous couple of years.

People Will Move Locally

Over the last year, it was found that people aren’t so much moving into cities or dense metro areas, but those who are already in them tend to stay. Most people living in dense metropolitan areas move in the interest of not looking for a change of scenery or new environment, but for finding a better home itself in or around their current home.

However, with the rise of remote work, more people than ever are moving out of their current home states.  In 2022, it’s predicted that more people will be leaving cities or their current homes to move long-distance and to other states.

Moving to the Suburbs

As more people leave cities than we’d normally see in the housing market, it’s a given that more people than ever have been moving into the suburbs. This is directly correlated to the COVID-19 pandemic, as people are looking for less-populated and dense areas, or less traditional city setups.

No matter what your plan is for moving in 2022 moving, make sure to plan for the housing market that you’re going to encounter when looking to buy a home. Things haven’t stabilized completely when it comes to moving trends amidst the ongoing pandemic, and competition can still be fierce in some areas, especially as people flock to more desired areas due to remote work.
