Moving to a New Town or City

Being a stranger in a strange land can be quite unnerving. Not only is there the stress that comes with moving, there’s also the uncertainty that comes with adapting to new social territory. We’ve asked many of our customers how long it took them to get used to their new hometown and the general consensus is between 6 months to 1 year. If you’re moving to a new town or city, take a look at some of these tips.

We’ve unpacked some advice from other movers to help make the transition easier.

1. Unpack and settle in

Take a deep breath, order your favorite type of takeout, and start to unpack. Having familiar surroundings is essential, that’s why it’s important to create a comfortable space for yourself. Constantly taking in new things can be draining, but having a safe, comfortable, and familiar place to return can provide much needed relief and security during a time of transition.

2. Get lost (and bring a charged phone)

Once you’ve gotten comfortable and put together your new nest, go for a drive to familiarize yourself with the surrounding area. See where the local grocery store and gas station is and find the local main drag if there is one. Shopping at small businesses and spending time at your neighborhood coffee shop can be a great way to meet others in the neighborhood.

3. Reach out to a friend

Chances are, you already know someone who lives in your new hometown, which will only make your transition easier. They can show you around, pointing out new places and even introduce you to other potential friends.

4. Use local online tools and try something new

Once you familiarize yourself with the area, look into that spin class you’ve always wanted to sign up for or join a local community organization. Using online local tools such as Nextdoor or Meetup can be extremely helpful in finding the right fit.

Don’t forget to be patient! It takes time to adapt to a new place. Enjoy the process. For all of your local, long distance, and international moving needs, Hollander Storage & Moving is here to help.
